**2 in 3 Parents Are Missing This Critical Legal Document for Their Kids’ Safety—Do You Have It?**

A recent survey has revealed a significant gap in emergency preparedness among parents. Two-thirds of parents do not possess a vital legal document necessary for their children in a crisis. The oversight could create serious complications for families during unexpected events.

The document in question is a legal guardianship designation. This allows parents to name a temporary caregiver for their children if they become incapacitated. Without it, courts may need to step in and decide who will care for the children. This process can be time-consuming and stressful for the family.

Most parents avoid completing this legal task. The primary reason is discomfort with confronting their own mortality. Thinking about a scenario where one is unable to care for their children is emotionally difficult. Many assume that a spouse or relative would automatically take over without issue.

Legal experts note that this assumption is often incorrect. In many jurisdictions, schools and medical providers cannot release a child to a non-parent without written authorization. Grandparents or other relatives may lack the legal authority to make critical decisions. This applies to medical treatment, school pickups, and travel.

The process to create the document is relatively straightforward. It involves naming a guardian and having the form signed and notarized. Some states offer simple forms that do not require an attorney. The task is inexpensive and can often be completed in under an hour.

Experts recommend reviewing the document regularly to ensure it reflects current wishes. As family circumstances change, the original choices may no longer be suitable. Parents should also discuss their plans with the appointed guardian to ensure they are willing to serve in that role.

Having this document offers peace of mind beyond just legal security. It ensures that trusted individuals are in place to provide care. The plan also reduces potential conflict among family members during a difficult time. It is a practical step in responsible family planning.
