Republican leaders confirmed they have spoken directly with Senator Mitch McConnell since his hospitalization three weeks ago. The top two GOP senators each reported having lengthy phone conversations with the minority leader.
Questions about McConnell’s condition have grown during his absence from the Capitol. The senator has been receiving treatment at a medical facility, though officials have not disclosed specific details about his illness.
Senator John Thune of South Dakota, the Republican whip, said he spoke with McConnell and found him in good spirits. Thune described the conversation as productive and focused on Senate business.
Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, the Republican conference chairman, also reported a detailed phone call with McConnell. Barrasso noted that the minority leader remains engaged in legislative strategy despite his hospitalization.
The lack of public updates has fueled speculation among lawmakers and staff. Some Republicans have expressed concern about the opacity surrounding McConnell’s health and recovery timeline.
McConnell’s office has released only brief statements since his admission. They have not clarified whether he will return to work soon or require extended rehabilitation.
The calls provide rare insight into McConnell’s condition. However, they do little to address broader questions about his long-term health and leadership capacity.
