Aaron Szabo will resign this month as head of the Environmental Protection Agency’s air office. He informed employees of his departure, which follows his oversight of multiple rollbacks to pollution limits.
Szabo led the agency’s air and radiation division during a period of significant regulatory changes. Under his direction, the EPA loosened rules on emissions from power plants and vehicles.
His tenure focused on reducing what the administration called burdensome federal regulations. Environmental groups criticized many of these actions as harmful to public health.
The air office is responsible for enforcing federal clean air standards. It oversees regulations affecting industries, transportation, and energy production across the country.
Szabo’s departure marks another shift in the agency’s leadership. He was a key figure in implementing President Trump’s deregulatory agenda for environmental policy.
His resignation takes effect at the end of July. The EPA has not yet announced a permanent replacement for the position.
The move comes as debates over air quality and climate change continue to intensify. The agency faces ongoing legal challenges to several of the rules rolled back under Szabo’s leadership.
