FIFA World Cup Fan Travel Drives 80 Percent of Tournament Emissions, Study Reveals

Fans traveling to World Cup host cities accounted for roughly 80 percent of the tournament’s total greenhouse gas emissions, according to new research.

The study focused on spectator travel as the dominant source of emissions during major sporting events. This pattern holds true for the FIFA World Cup and similar large-scale gatherings.

Researchers tracked travel patterns of fans attending matches in host cities. The findings highlight the significant environmental cost of moving millions of people across long distances.

Emissions from flights, trains, and car trips combined far exceeded those from stadium operations. Infrastructure construction and event logistics contributed a smaller share.

The data suggests that reducing fan travel emissions remains a critical challenge for tournament organizers. Current carbon offset programs may not fully address the scale of the impact.

Changes such as scheduling matches regionally or promoting virtual attendance could lower future emissions. However, the allure of in-person experience continues to drive high travel numbers.

The report adds to a growing body of evidence on event-related climate impacts. It underscores the tension between global fan engagement and environmental sustainability goals.
