Rubio and Chinese Diplomat Advance Plans for Trump-Xi Washington Summit

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and China’s foreign minister held talks in Manila, focusing primarily on plans for a potential summit between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington.

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, was largely dedicated to arranging the high-level diplomatic encounter. Officials discussed logistics and agenda items for the proposed summit, signaling continued efforts to stabilize relations between the two nations.

Notably, Rubio did not raise President Trump’s repeated allegations of Chinese election interference during the discussions. The omission suggests a deliberate focus on forward-looking cooperation rather than contentious disputes.

China has consistently denied any involvement in influencing U.S. elections, dismissing Trump’s claims as baseless. The diplomatic channel was kept open despite these unresolved tensions.

The potential Trump-Xi summit in Washington would mark a significant step in bilateral relations, which have fluctuated between cooperation and confrontation. Both sides appear eager to manage differences through direct dialogue.

Rubio’s engagement with his Chinese counterpart reflects a broader strategy of prioritizing strategic communication over public disagreements. The outcome of the summit planning could set the tone for future U.S.-China relations.

Neither Washington nor Beijing has confirmed a final date or agenda for the proposed meeting. Further consultations are expected before any official announcement is made.
