House Republicans Link Must-Pass Defense Bill to Trump’s Controversial SAVE Act

House Republicans have linked the annual defense policy bill to President Trump’s voting restriction measure, his so-called SAVE Act.

The move aligns with Trump’s demand that Congress pass stricter voter identification laws. The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship to register to vote.

By attaching the measure to the must-pass National Defense Authorization Act, GOP leaders aim to force a vote on the issue. The strategy bypasses typical legislative hurdles that could delay or block the voting bill.

Democrats have strongly opposed the SAVE Act, calling it a modern-day poll tax. They argue it would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters, particularly minorities and low-income citizens.

The defense bill traditionally enjoys bipartisan support, making it a high-stakes vehicle for the voting restrictions. If the combined legislation fails, it could stall military funding and pay raises for service members.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has defended the tactic, stating it fulfills a key campaign promise. He maintains that election integrity is a national security priority.

The Senate is unlikely to pass the House version with the voting measure attached. This sets up a potential confrontation between the chambers as the September funding deadline approaches.

Critics warn the move politicizes military policy at a time of global tensions. Supporters insist it is necessary to restore confidence in federal elections.

The final outcome remains uncertain, but the maneuver ensures the voting debate will dominate the upcoming legislative session.
