Global oil surges past $100 per barrel after Houthi attacks on Saudi tankers and Trump’s Iran warning

Global oil prices surged Thursday, with Brent crude exceeding $100 per barrel for the first time since May. The increase follows claims by Yemen’s Houthi militants that they attacked two Saudi Arabian tankers in the Red Sea.

The attacks mark an escalation in regional tensions, disrupting a key shipping route for crude exports. Houthi forces stated the strikes targeted vessels linked to Saudi Arabia’s energy infrastructure.

In response, President Donald Trump threatened “military punishment” against Iran, accusing Tehran of backing the Houthi militants. The warning added to fears of broader conflict in the Middle East.

Brent crude settled at a two-month high, reflecting market concerns over supply disruptions. Analysts note that the Red Sea chokepoint is critical for global oil flows, with any sustained threat potentially tightening supplies.

The rise above $100 per barrel revives pricing levels not seen since late spring. Traders are now weighing the risk of further attacks against efforts to stabilize production from major exporters.

U.S. crude futures also advanced, supported by the geopolitical premium. The rally underscores how quickly regional incidents can influence global energy markets.

Market participants remain watchful for any retaliatory actions that could affect output from Saudi Arabia and neighboring producers. The situation highlights the persistent volatility in oil prices tied to Middle East instability.

No immediate disruptions to Saudi exports have been reported, but shipping insurance costs have risen. The longer-term outlook depends on whether diplomatic channels can ease tensions or if military responses escalate further.
