Fed’s Lisa Cook Denies Mortgage Fraud Allegations, Calls Trump Removal Bid Legally Baseless

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook denied allegations of mortgage fraud, responding to claims that she misrepresented her primary residence in an Atlanta apartment loan application. Her legal counsel described the error as inadvertent and said President Donald Trump has no legal basis to remove her from office.

Cook’s attorney stated that the listing of the Atlanta apartment as a primary residence was a mistake, not an intentional act of deception. The clarification follows public scrutiny of a property transaction tied to her financial disclosures.

The allegations surfaced as part of broader criticism from Trump allies targeting Federal Reserve officials. Cook’s defense argues that procedural errors in loan paperwork do not constitute fraud under federal law.

Legal experts note that removal of a Federal Reserve governor requires specific statutory grounds, typically involving inefficiency, neglect of duty, or malfeasance in office. A single mortgage application error, they suggest, falls short of that threshold.

Cook has served on the Fed’s Board of Governors since 2022, focusing on economic research and community banking issues. Her term extends well beyond the current presidential administration, adding political weight to any removal attempt.

The White House has not formally commented on Cook’s status, and no removal proceedings have been initiated. Cook’s legal team remains confident that the matter will not affect her position.

Analysts view the episode as part of an ongoing tension between the executive branch and independent financial regulators. The outcome could set a precedent for how future disputes over Fed leadership are handled.
