For Trump, Iran Policy Is Stuck Between Escalation and a Peace That Never Comes

The war with Iran has deteriorated over the past six months into a prolonged conflict, resembling what critics describe as a “forever war.” No clear military objectives have been defined, and no timeline for withdrawal has been established. The administration’s strategy remains muddled between escalating combat operations and seeking a negotiated settlement.

Officials close to the White House indicate that President Trump is frustrated by the lack of progress on both fronts. Military commanders have pressed for expanded authority to strike deeper into Iranian territory, while diplomatic aides warn that further aggression could eliminate any chance for talks. This internal divide has paralyzed decision-making at the highest levels.

The initial phase of the conflict was framed as a limited response to Iranian provocation. That justification has since faded, with repeated airstrikes and naval engagements failing to produce a decisive outcome. Iranian forces have adapted quickly, using asymmetric tactics that neutralize the United States’ conventional superiority.

Economic pressure remains a central tool in Washington’s strategy, but its effects have been uneven. Sanctions have crippled Iran’s oil exports, yet they have also hardened the regime’s resolve. Inflation and shortages have fueled public discontent, but the government has successfully framed the war as a defensive struggle against foreign aggression.

Regional allies have grown increasingly wary of the conflict’s trajectory. Gulf states that initially supported the U.S. campaign are now quietly urging restraint, fearing that a wider war could disrupt shipping routes and destabilize their own governments. European partners have distanced themselves, offering mediation only if Washington commits to a ceasefire.

Behind closed doors, the president has floated the idea of a unilateral drawdown. Advisers have cautioned against such a move, warning that a sudden withdrawal would be seen as a victory for Tehran. Instead, they propose a phased redeployment tied to vague diplomatic milestones, a plan that critics say merely postpones an inevitable decision.

The human cost continues to climb. Civilian casualties in Iranian border cities have sparked protests, while U.S. service members face an extended deployment with no end date. Families on both sides are bearing the burden of a conflict that lacks a coherent endgame.

For now, the administration appears trapped between two unpalatable options: escalation with no clear exit or a peace process that Tehran shows little interest in joining. Until a decisive choice is made, the war is likely to grind on, consuming resources and attention without producing victory or genuine peace.
