The Transportation Security Administration is considering allowing water bottles through airport security for passengers enrolled in PreCheck.
The change would relax a rule that has restricted liquids at checkpoints for more than two decades.
Currently, all passengers must limit liquids to 3.4 ounces and place them in a single quart-sized bag.
PreCheck members already enjoy expedited screening and often keep shoes, belts, and light jackets on.
Under the proposed policy, they could also carry water through checkpoints without size limits.
The agency has not announced a timeline or confirmed which airports would participate in the change.
Security officials say the shift reflects improved screening technology and a focus on risk-based procedures.
If adopted, the policy would mark one of the most significant relaxations of airport liquid rules since 2006.
