Trump Says D.C. Triumphal Arch Would Be a ‘Military Complex’ Housing Drones and Snipers

President Trump announced plans on Sunday for a triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., describing it as a military complex. The structure would house drones and snipers, according to his statement. The proposal echoes his earlier justification for a White House ballroom. In both cases, he cited national security as the driving rationale.

The arch is intended to serve as more than a decorative monument. Mr. Trump said it would function as an active defense installation. Drones would operate from the site, and snipers would be stationed within it. The president framed the project as a necessary security measure for the capital.

Details about the arch’s location, design, and cost remain unclear. The White House has not released a formal plan or timeline for construction. It is unknown whether Congress would need to approve the project. Federal law often governs new monuments on public land in Washington.

Mr. Trump compared the arch to the proposed White House ballroom during his announcement. He argued that the ballroom was needed for secure diplomatic events. The same logic now applies to the arch, he said. Both projects, in his view, address gaps in protecting government facilities.

Critics questioned whether a triumphal arch fits the stated security purpose. Some noted that sniper positions and drone launch sites already exist across the capital. Others asked why a monument would be the preferred solution. No independent security assessment has been made public.

The announcement drew immediate reactions from lawmakers and local officials. Some expressed concern about militarizing a public landmark. Others demanded transparency on funding and oversight. The D.C. government has not yet commented on the proposal.

Presidential monuments typically require review by federal commissions. The National Capital Planning Commission and the Commission of Fine Arts oversee such projects. Their approval process includes public hearings and design evaluations. It is not clear whether the arch would follow that path.

Mr. Trump has not specified when construction might begin. He also declined to say how drones and snipers would be integrated into the arch’s daily operations. The proposal remains at an early stage with few concrete details. Further announcements are expected in the coming weeks.
