U.N. General Assembly Faces Old Conflicts and New A.I. Threats

The U.N. General Assembly opens its annual session this week, facing a crowded agenda of old and new threats.

World leaders will gather in New York to address lingering conflicts, economic instability and a growing list of humanitarian crises.

This year’s meeting also confronts emerging challenges, including the rapid rise of artificial intelligence and its impact on global security.

The assembly serves as a central platform for diplomacy, where nations air grievances and seek cooperation on shared problems.

Discussions on A.I. will focus on setting international norms, as countries race to regulate the technology without stifling innovation.

Meanwhile, the U.N. is searching for a replacement for António Guterres, who has served two terms as secretary general and is stepping down.

The selection process comes at a critical time, with member states divided over the organization’s future direction and priorities.

The next secretary general will inherit a packed agenda, from peacekeeping missions to climate goals and reform of the Security Council.

Behind the speeches, diplomats will work on resolutions addressing food insecurity, refugee flows and nuclear nonproliferation.

Expectations for concrete outcomes remain modest, as major powers remain at odds on several key issues.

Still, the assembly offers a rare chance for direct talks, even when consensus proves elusive.

The session will test whether the U.N. can adapt to a world of shifting alliances and unconventional threats.
