The AI ‘scare trade’ is finally hitting banks — and bargain hunters should take note

Bank profits have surged in recent years as interest rates climbed. Consumers kept money in low-interest checking accounts for convenience and easy access. That reluctance boosted bank earnings significantly.

Now, that trend faces a new challenge from artificial intelligence. AI-driven tools make it easier for customers to compare rates and move funds. The shift could pressure banks that relied on depositor inertia.

Investors have started to notice the risk. Bank stocks tied to steady deposit bases have weakened. The market is beginning to price in lower future profits from cheap deposits.

Bargain hunters may see opportunity in the selloff. Some banks still hold strong balance sheets and loyal customers. The panic could create openings for long-term buyers.

Not all banks face equal exposure. Smaller regional lenders may struggle more than large national institutions. Their customers tend to be more rate-sensitive.

AI also cuts both ways. Banks can use the same technology to improve service and retain clients. Institutions that adapt quickly may offset some deposit flight.

The key question is how fast depositors will act. If AI makes switching easier, the advantage of customer inertia shrinks. Banks must respond with better rates or stronger digital tools.

For now, the AI scare trade remains early. But it is reshaping how investors value bank deposits. Bargain hunters should watch which banks adapt rather than simply react.
