Goldman Sachs Board Weighs Plan to Name John Waldron as Next CEO, With David Solomon Moving to Executive Chair

Goldman Sachs’ board has discussed a succession plan that could name John Waldron as the bank’s next chief executive.

Under the plan, current CEO David Solomon would step down as soon as next year, according to people familiar with the matter.

Solomon, who has led Goldman since 2018, would move into the role of executive chair rather than leave the firm entirely.

The discussions remain preliminary, and no final decision has been made by the board.

Waldron currently serves as Goldman’s president and chief operating officer, a position he has held since 2018.

He has long been viewed as a leading internal candidate for the top job.

The proposed transition would mark a significant leadership change at one of Wall Street’s most prominent institutions.

Solomon’s tenure has included record profits during the pandemic-era trading boom and a later push into consumer banking.

That consumer strategy faced setbacks, and the bank has since scaled back those ambitions.

A shift to an executive chair role would keep Solomon involved in strategic matters while handing daily leadership to Waldron.
