Legal Immigrants Lose Medicaid Coverage Under Trump’s Bill

A new bill signed by President Trump strips Medicaid eligibility from many legal immigrants. The change targets those without green cards. It marks a major shift in public health policy.

The legislation affects immigrants lawfully present in the United States. This includes visa holders, asylum seekers, and others with temporary status. They will lose access to the low-income health program.

Medicaid currently serves millions of low-income Americans. Federal law previously allowed certain qualified immigrants to enroll. The new bill removes that pathway for non-green card holders.

Immigration status now determines who can receive coverage. Green card holders remain eligible under the law. Other legal immigrants must find alternative insurance options.

Hospitals and community clinics may see a rise in uncompensated care. Many patients will delay treatment without coverage. Emergency rooms often become the only option for the uninsured.

State governments will bear much of the financial strain. Some states may expand their own programs to fill the gap. Others are expected to cut services or tighten eligibility further.

The bill’s long-term impact remains uncertain. Legal challenges are likely in the coming months. Advocacy groups say they will fight the changes in court.
