Paramount’s $52 Billion Debt Deal Signals the End of Cheap Money for Corporate America

Paramount Global recently completed a $52 billion debt sale, the largest of its kind this year. The media company paid a steep price to secure the financing. The deal highlights how rising interest rates are affecting corporate borrowers across the market.

The bond sale included multiple tranches with maturities ranging from short-term to long-dated notes. Investors demanded higher yields to compensate for the risk. Paramount agreed to those terms to fund its operations and refinance existing obligations.

Higher rates have made debt more expensive for all companies. Firms that need to borrow must now pay significantly more than they did just two years ago. This shift is reshaping how executives plan their capital structures.

Credit rating agencies have taken note of the increased burden. Companies with weaker balance sheets face even steeper borrowing costs. Paramount’s deal reflects that reality, as its credit profile required generous terms to attract buyers.

Other media and entertainment companies may soon follow with their own offerings. Streaming services continue to burn cash while seeking profitability. Those needs will force more firms to test the bond market under less favorable conditions.

Investors remain cautious about lending to highly leveraged businesses. They are demanding stronger covenants and higher coupons. This selectivity pushes up costs for issuers that carry significant debt loads.

The Paramount sale signals that the era of cheap money has ended. Corporate America must adapt to a new financing landscape. Borrowers will need to weigh every dollar of debt against tighter returns.
