Five Things to Know About Tokenized Stocks

Tokenized stocks are moving closer to mainstream U.S. markets after a recent SEC order. The decision sets the stage for blockchain-based versions of traditional equities. This could change how investors buy, sell, and hold shares.

Stock tokens represent ownership in a company through digital assets on a blockchain. They aim to mirror the price and performance of actual shares. Trading can occur around the clock, unlike standard market hours.

The SEC order opens a path for regulated offerings in the United States. Previously, tokenized stocks operated mainly in foreign or unregulated venues. U.S. regulators had raised concerns about investor protection and market integrity.

Supporters say tokenization offers faster settlement and lower fees. It could broaden access for retail investors who lack traditional brokerage accounts. Fractional ownership becomes easier with digital tokens.

Critics warn about custody risks and unclear legal rights. Token holders may not receive the same voting powers or dividends as shareholders. Enforcement and tax treatment also remain uncertain.

The technology relies on blockchain networks that record ownership transparently. Smart contracts automate transfers and corporate actions. However, these systems still face scalability and security challenges.

Market watchers expect gradual adoption rather than an overnight shift. Major exchanges and fintech firms are exploring pilot programs. Regulatory clarity will determine how quickly tokenized stocks gain traction.

Investors should understand the difference between a token and a share. A token is a digital claim, not necessarily a direct equity stake. Reading the fine print remains essential before buying any tokenized product.
