He Saw Ebola First—50 Years Later, He Warns the World Still Isn’t Ready

Dr. Peter Piot first saw the Ebola virus under a microscope nearly 50 years ago in Zaire. The spindly, thread-like pathogen was unlike anything he had encountered. That discovery launched a five-decade career fighting deadly diseases.

Piot was part of the team that identified Ebola in 1976 during an outbreak in central Africa. The virus killed hundreds before it was contained. He later helped characterize how it spread through bodily fluids.

In a recent interview, Piot reflected on his long career studying both Ebola and HIV. He said the world remains dangerously unprepared for new outbreaks. He pointed to gaps in surveillance and rapid response systems.

Piot noted that Ebola outbreaks have become more frequent in recent years. Population growth and deforestation bring humans closer to virus-carrying animals. These conditions raise the risk of spillover events.

He also warned that HIV continues to challenge public health decades after its discovery. Progress in treatment has been significant but uneven. Millions still lack access to lifesaving medicines.

Piot argued that political will and funding for global health have weakened. He urged countries to invest in early warning networks and local laboratories. Without them, outbreaks can spiral before help arrives.

Despite the challenges, Piot expressed cautious optimism about scientific advances. New vaccines and antiviral drugs have improved Ebola survival rates. He called for equitable distribution of these tools worldwide.

At 75, Piot remains active in global health advocacy. He believes the lessons from Ebola and HIV must guide future pandemic planning. Ignoring those lessons, he said, would be a costly mistake.
