SpaceX’s Starlink Could Threaten AT&T Stock for Years as Analyst Downgrades Telecom Sector

An analyst has withdrawn bullish recommendations for major telecommunications stocks. Bernstein’s Laurent Yoon downgraded the sector, citing rising competitive pressure. The shift reflects growing uncertainty in an industry long viewed as stable.

Yoon specifically flagged SpaceX as a long-term threat to AT&T and its peers. The company’s satellite internet service, Starlink, continues to expand rapidly. That growth could erode traditional broadband and mobile revenue over time.

Starlink offers high-speed internet via low-Earth-orbit satellites. It reaches rural and underserved areas where telecom providers have struggled to compete. As the network improves, it may attract more urban customers as well.

AT&T has invested heavily in fiber and 5G infrastructure. Those upgrades aim to retain customers and attract new ones. However, satellite alternatives could undercut the need for physical networks in some regions.

The analyst warns of prolonged stock volatility for telecom carriers. Investors may reassess valuations as competition intensifies. Regulatory and technical hurdles remain for SpaceX, but its momentum is hard to ignore.

Telecom stocks have traditionally been valued for dividends and stability. A credible space-based rival changes that narrative. It introduces a wildcard that could pressure share prices for years.

Yoon’s downgrade covers all major U.S. telecom carriers, not just AT&T. The call signals a broader caution about the sector’s future. No timeline was given for when the threat might peak.

Market reaction has been muted so far. Many investors still view satellite internet as a niche service. Yet the analyst’s warning highlights a risk that could grow quietly over time.

AT&T has not issued a direct response to the downgrade. The company continues to promote its own network expansion plans. How effectively it counters SpaceX’s rise remains to be seen.
