Breville Eye Q Toaster Review: Smart Sensors, Unreliable Browning

The Breville Eye Q toaster uses optical sensors to measure toast darkness. This technology aims to replace standard timer-based browning. The concept promises consistent results for every slice.

A sensor inside the slot detects the bread’s color as it toasts. The appliance adjusts the heating cycle based on this real-time data. This approach differs from traditional models that rely on fixed settings.

Despite the advanced hardware, the final toast quality falls short. Testing revealed uneven browning across different slices. Some areas emerged burnt while others remained pale.

The appliance offers multiple presets for various bread types. Users can select settings for bagels, frozen waffles, or pastries. However, these modes do not guarantee perfect outcomes.

Thick slices often toast differently than thin ones in the same cycle. The sensor struggles to compensate for irregular textures or dense crumbs. This leads to inconsistent results from one morning to the next.

The exterior design is sleek and modern for kitchen counters. A digital display shows the progress and selected settings. The build quality feels sturdy and durable for daily use.

At its price point, the toaster faces strong competition from simpler models. Basic units often deliver more reliable browning without smart sensors. The Eye Q’s innovation does not justify its inconsistent performance.
