Let the Internet Reset: Rebuilding Online Spaces Around People, Not Platforms

The internet’s major platforms now function as captured territory. A small group of oligarchs controls the spaces where most online activity happens.

Those platforms are also saturated with low-quality, automated content. Much of it is designed to provoke rather than inform.

The result amplifies humanity’s worst impulses. Outrage, division, and shallow engagement have become default settings.

Users have little say in how these spaces evolve. Decisions rest with owners whose interests rarely align with the public good.

Reform within the current system has proven difficult. The incentives that drive platforms toward engagement and profit remain firmly in place.

Starting over offers a different path. Smaller, community-governed spaces could prioritize human connection over scale.

A reset would not mean abandoning the internet. It would mean rebuilding it around principles that serve people rather than concentrated power.
