Silicon Valley’s AI Giants Flood Washington with Lobbyists Ahead of Regulation

Silicon Valley’s artificial intelligence companies are dramatically increasing their presence in Washington. OpenAI and Anthropic are opening new offices in the capital to get closer to federal lawmakers.

Both firms are hiring dozens of lobbyists to influence policy. Their spending on political outreach has reached record levels this year.

The push comes as Congress considers sweeping new regulations for the AI industry. Tech leaders want to shape the rules before they are written.

Anthropic now employs one lobbyist for every two engineers in its Washington office. OpenAI has quadrupled its lobbying budget since last year.

The companies argue that proactive engagement with regulators is necessary. They fear that poorly designed laws could stifle innovation.

Critics warn that the spending spree is an attempt to dilute oversight. Consumer groups say the firms are trying to write favorable rules.

Trade associations representing major tech players have also increased their activity. The lobbying blitz spans both sides of the political aisle.

Federal lawmakers face mounting pressure to act on AI safety. The industry’s growing influence in D.C. is reshaping the debate.
