Capitol Police Lawsuit Aims to Stop Trump’s ‘Slush Fund’ for Jan. 6 Rioters

Two Capitol Police officers filed a lawsuit Tuesday to block the Trump administration from distributing funds to defendants charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. The officers accused the administration of creating a “slush fund” to reward rioters and groups that committed violence on behalf of President Trump.

The lawsuit targets a proposed payout plan that would use taxpayer money to reimburse legal fees and other costs for those convicted or accused in connection with the Capitol breach. The officers argue the fund would effectively shield participants from the financial consequences of their actions.

According to the filing, the fund could total millions of dollars, distributed directly to individuals or organizations involved in the insurrection. The officers say this violates federal law prohibiting the use of public funds to reward criminal conduct.

The legal action comes amid a broader debate over accountability for the Jan. 6 events. The officers, who suffered physical and emotional injuries during the attack, say the fund sends a dangerous message that political loyalty can override legal responsibility.

The two plaintiffs, both veteran Capitol Police officers, testified before Congress about the violence they faced that day. They have become vocal advocates for holding rioters and their backers accountable.

The administration has not yet responded publicly to the lawsuit. Legal experts say the case could set a precedent regarding how the government handles compensation for those involved in political violence.

If the court blocks the fund, it would mark a significant victory for law enforcement personnel who continue to seek justice for the attack. The officers hope the ruling will deter similar efforts in the future.
