French Appeals Court Convicts Air France and Airbus of Manslaughter in 2009 Flight 447 Crash

A French appeals court in Paris has ruled Air France and Airbus guilty of involuntary manslaughter for the 2009 crash of Flight 447.

The Airbus A330 plunged into the Atlantic Ocean during a storm, killing all 228 people on board.

The court found both the airline and the aircraft manufacturer criminally liable for their roles in the disaster.

The verdict overturned a 2019 lower court decision that had cleared the two companies of criminal responsibility.

Prosecutors argued that Air France failed to provide adequate pilot training for high-altitude stall conditions.

Airbus was accused of concealing known issues with the plane’s speed sensors, which contributed to the crash sequence.

The case has been closely watched as a major test of corporate criminal liability in aviation disasters.

Sentencing for both companies is expected to be announced at a later date.
