Dragon Coaster Reopens at Playland for Memorial Day Weekend After Major Restoration

The Dragon Coaster at Playland in Rye, N.Y., is set to reopen this Memorial Day weekend after a major restoration. The historic roller coaster, one of the oldest in the United States, remained idle last summer for repairs and upgrades. The reopening marks a significant milestone as the ride nears its 100th anniversary.

The restoration focused on the wooden structure’s track and support framework to ensure rider safety. Workers replaced sections of timber and reinforced key elements along the iconic ride. The project was led by specialized engineers who preserved the coaster’s original design.

Playland officials confirmed the Dragon Coaster will operate at full capacity for the holiday weekend. The ride first opened at the Westchester County amusement park in 1929. It has long been considered a centerpiece attraction for generations of visitors.

The closed season allowed crews to address aging infrastructure without disrupting seasonal operations. The coaster’s layout, featuring a sweeping figure-eight design and two tunnels, remains unchanged. Officials emphasized that the updates maintain the ride’s historic character while meeting modern safety standards.

The reopening coincides with broader renovations at Playland, including upgraded pathways and restrooms. The county government has invested millions in recent years to revive the park’s appeal. The Dragon Coaster’s return is expected to draw both local families and nostalgia seekers.

Technical reviews of the restoration will continue throughout the summer as part of routine inspections. Riders will experience the same drops and curves that have defined the coaster for nearly a century. The project ensures the ride can operate reliably into its 100th year.

The Dragon Coaster remains among the oldest continuously operating roller coasters in the country. Its return adds a classic thrill to the amusement park’s lineup. Visitors can experience the ride starting Memorial Day weekend.
