Beauty’s Dangerous New Obsession with “Maxxing” Language

The beauty industry has adopted terminology from the manosphere, specifically the term “maxxing,” and it is raising serious concerns. This language originates from online communities often criticized for misogynistic viewpoints. Adopting such vocabulary blurs the line between self-improvement and harmful ideology.

“Maxxing” refers to maximizing one’s physical appearance through often extreme measures. The term first gained traction in forums focused on dating strategy and social hierarchy. Its migration into beauty discourse feels out of place.

Brands and influencers now use “looksmaxxing” to describe skincare routines or cosmetic procedures. This framing reduces complex beauty practices to a rigid, competitive metric. It prioritizes external validation over personal expression or health.

This shift reflects a deeper problem in how the beauty industry markets itself. Instead of promoting diverse standards, it borrows language with aggressive undertones. The original manosphere context ties “maxxing” to self-objectification and control.

Consumers are left with a lexicon that feels detached from the beauty industry’s traditional focus on artistry. The obsession with “maxxing” encourages unsustainable habits and unrealistic goals. It treats beauty as a zero-sum game.

The industry would benefit from returning to inclusive and empowering language. Terms like “maxxing” suggest a finish line can be reached through effort alone. This ignores the role of genetics, privilege, and subjective taste.

Beauty should not be about outdoing others in a race. Using manosphere jargon undermines messages of self-care and authenticity. The conversation deserves better vocabulary—one that respects both the practice and the person.
