Don’t stall: $120 oil changes are here. Why skipping maintenance will cost you more.

Drivers face rising costs for routine car maintenance, with oil changes now reaching $120 or more at many service centers. The price increase stems from a combination of factors, including higher labor rates, more expensive synthetic oils, and supply chain pressures affecting parts availability.

Frequent oil changes remain essential for engine longevity, especially in modern vehicles that rely on synthetic blends. Skipping or delaying this service can lead to sludge buildup, reduced fuel efficiency, and costly engine repairs down the line.

Labor costs have climbed significantly as automotive technicians become harder to find and retain. Shops are raising hourly rates to attract skilled workers, directly impacting the final bill for customers.

Synthetic oil prices have surged due to rising crude oil costs and increased demand for high-performance lubricants. Many newer cars require synthetic oil exclusively, leaving drivers with fewer budget-friendly options.

Parts shortages also affect maintenance pricing, as filters, gaskets, and other consumables become more expensive. Repair shops often pass these added costs directly to consumers.

Despite the higher prices, experts advise against postponing regular maintenance. Neglecting oil changes can void warranties and lead to major engine failures that cost thousands to fix.

Drivers can mitigate expenses by shopping around for competitive pricing, using manufacturer coupons, or performing simple services themselves. Staying proactive with vehicle care remains the most cost-effective strategy in the long run.
