Gamer Cashes Out $1,000 in Physical Discs at GameStop as Sony Marks the End of the Disc Era

A Columbus gamer traded in roughly $1,000 worth of physical game discs at a local GameStop. The move came just days after Sony announced a major shift away from physical media.

The gamer chose to liquidate his entire collection of physical games. This decision highlights a growing trend as the industry moves toward digital downloads.

Sony recently revealed that its upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro model will ship without a disc drive. The announcement signals what many see as the end of the disc era for gaming.

Physical disc sales have been declining for years. Major publishers now report that over 70% of game sales are digital.

Gamers face a choice between holding onto physical collections or cashing out. Trade-in values for discs have dropped significantly as demand wanes.

GameStop has adapted by expanding its digital business. The retailer now sells digital codes alongside used physical games.

Industry analysts predict that the next generation of consoles will be entirely disc-free. This transition mirrors the shift seen in movies and music.

For now, collectors can still find value in rare or sealed physical games. But standard used discs are rapidly losing their resale market.
