Google Makes a Fresh Bet on Nuclear Power as the AI Energy Crunch Intensifies

Google has signed a major nuclear power agreement to support its growing AI operations. The deal with Constellation Energy will provide enough electricity to match the output of a new nuclear reactor. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the arrangement signals a significant shift in how tech companies plan to power data centers.

Constellation’s stock rose sharply after the announcement. Investors see the agreement as a strong endorsement of nuclear energy’s role in the AI boom. The company operates several nuclear plants and will supply Google with steady, carbon-free power.

AI systems require massive amounts of electricity to train and run. Data centers consume far more energy than traditional computing infrastructure. Tech firms face pressure to secure reliable power sources that also meet climate goals.

Nuclear energy offers a constant supply that renewables like solar and wind cannot always guarantee. Google has previously invested in solar and wind projects. This deal adds nuclear to its energy portfolio as a complement to intermittent sources.

The agreement reflects a broader trend among major technology companies. Microsoft, Amazon, and others have recently pursued nuclear power deals. These firms need round-the-clock electricity for AI workloads that run continuously.

Grid operators and regulators are watching these developments closely. Nuclear plants take years to build and face strict safety reviews. However, existing reactors can provide immediate capacity without new construction.

Google’s move could encourage more corporate investment in nuclear power. Utilities may accelerate plans to extend reactor licenses or build small modular reactors. The AI energy crunch is reshaping how the tech industry thinks about electricity procurement.
