JoAnna Mendoza has won Arizona’s 6th Congressional District race, giving Democrats a key House pickup.
The retired Marine defeated two-term Republican Representative Juan Ciscomani in a highly competitive southeastern Arizona district.
The result adds one more seat to the Democratic column in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The district had drawn national attention as one of the cycle’s most closely watched contests.
Mendoza’s military background became a central part of her campaign message to voters.
Ciscomani, a two-term incumbent, had held the seat through previous competitive cycles.
Control of the House remains the broader stakes as results continue to come in from races nationwide.
