John Bolton Pleads Guilty to Retaining Classified Documents in Landmark Deal

John Bolton, former national security adviser to President Donald Trump, has reached a deal to plead guilty to illegally retaining classified information. The charge carries a potential prison sentence of up to five years and a possible fine.

The plea agreement was disclosed in court filings on Thursday, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn intense scrutiny over national security protocols. Bolton had previously faced allegations related to his handling of sensitive materials after leaving the White House in 2019.

Prosecutors stated that the former official knowingly kept classified documents after his tenure ended. The information was reportedly found among personal records at his residence, raising concerns about security breaches.

Under the terms of the deal, Bolton will admit to one count of unauthorized possession of classified information. Sentencing guidelines suggest he may avoid a lengthy prison term, though specific penalties remain pending judicial approval.

Legal experts note that such cases typically hinge on whether the defendant understood the classified nature of the materials. Bolton’s legal team has emphasized his cooperation with investigators throughout the process.

The case originated from an investigation into Bolton’s 2020 memoir, which reportedly contained classified details about national security matters. The government argued that the book’s publication risked exposing sensitive operations.

Bolton’s guilty plea will be formally entered at a future court hearing, where a judge will determine the final sentence. The outcome is expected to set a precedent for how similar cases involving former officials are handled.
