Microsoft’s Quantum Chief Says Hardware Proof Beats Peer Review—And He’s Not Waiting for Permission

Microsoft’s quantum computing leader, Zulfi Alam, says his team does not need to prove they created a new state of matter. The company claims a breakthrough in engineering Majorana particles, which could underpin a new type of quantum computer. The scientific community remains skeptical. Alam argues that practical demonstrations matter more than peer review. He points to the device’s functioning hardware as evidence. Independent researchers, however, have not confirmed the results. The dispute centers on how to verify a fundamental physics claim. Microsoft has invested years in the project. Its roadmap depends on this technology succeeding. Alam acknowledges the criticism but prioritizes engineering progress. He believes the device’s performance will ultimately settle the debate. Until then, the scientific disagreement continues. Microsoft’s timeline for a commercial quantum computer remains unchanged. The company reports steady progress on its hardware. External validation still lacks. Alam says the field’s standards may not fit this engineering milestone. He focuses on building a working system, not convincing theorists. The outcome could redefine computing. Or it could remain an unresolved claim. Either way, Microsoft is moving forward.
