Military Leaders to Review Measures for Reducing Civilian Harm in Modern Warfare

Military leaders will gather to address civilian casualties in modern warfare. U.S. Central Command will host a daylong conference at its Tampa headquarters. The meeting follows seven months of active conflict in Iran.

The conference aims to identify practical steps for reducing noncombatant harm. Officials will review recent operations and assess current safeguards. Findings could shape future rules of engagement.

Civilian deaths remain a persistent challenge in urban combat. Precision technology has improved targeting but has not eliminated risk. Commanders face pressure to balance mission goals with humanitarian duties.

The Iran campaign has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers and rights groups. Reports cite damage to residential areas and infrastructure. Military officials have acknowledged the need for stronger protections.

Central Command oversees operations across the Middle East and Central Asia. Its policies often set standards for allied forces. Changes adopted there could influence other commands.

Attendees will include legal advisers, targeting specialists, and field commanders. Discussions will cover intelligence gathering and strike approval chains. Training and accountability measures are also on the agenda.

No specific policy changes have been announced before the meeting. The conference is expected to produce recommendations rather than immediate orders. Further reviews will follow in the coming months.
