New Bill Would Lower Social Security Retirement Age to 60 — See Who Qualifies

A new bill in Congress proposes lowering the full retirement age for Social Security from 67 to 60. The change would apply only to workers in physically demanding jobs. Retirement experts say the proposal could strain the program’s trust fund.

The bill aims to help workers whose jobs require physical labor. These workers often cannot remain employed until the current full retirement age. Supporters argue the change would provide relief for those in challenging professions.

Experts warn the plan could create a two-tiered system among workers. One group would qualify for earlier benefits, while others would wait longer. This division could lead to fairness debates among different industries.

The Social Security trust fund already faces financial pressure. Adding early retirees could accelerate its depletion. Analysts say the fund may need additional revenue or benefit cuts to remain solvent.

Physically demanding jobs include construction, mining, and certain manufacturing roles. Workers in these fields often experience wear and tear on their bodies. Many leave their jobs before reaching 67 due to health limitations.

The bill does not specify how to define physically demanding work. Lawmakers would need to establish clear criteria for eligibility. Without precise rules, the program could face administrative challenges.

Retirement experts suggest alternatives such as partial benefits or retraining programs. These options might address worker needs without destabilizing the system. However, no consensus exists on the best approach.

The proposal now moves to committee for further review. Its future depends on bipartisan support and fiscal analysis. If passed, it would mark a major shift in Social Security policy.
