New Policy Would Let White House Block Federal Grants That Conflict with Trump’s Agenda

A new proposal would grant the administration the authority to block federal grants that do not align with President Trump’s agenda or that promote what it labels as “anti-American” values.

The blueprint, outlined in a recent policy document, seeks to centralize control over grant funding within the Office of Management and Budget. It would allow officials to review and reject grants based on political criteria.

Critics argue the measure could undermine the role of federal agencies and independent experts in distributing funds. They contend it prioritizes political loyalty over merit and performance.

Supporters say the proposal ensures taxpayer money is used to advance national interests, not causes that oppose administration goals. They frame it as a check against policies deemed hostile to American values.

The policy would apply to a broad range of grants, including those for scientific research, community development, and education. This could affect billions of dollars in federal spending.

Legal experts predict potential court challenges over whether such authority exceeds executive powers. The proposal may test boundaries between White House control and congressional appropriations.

The plan has already drawn sharp reactions from advocacy groups and lawmakers. Some state governors have indicated they will resist efforts to condition funding on political tests.

The administration intends to finalize the policy in the coming months. Its impact could reshape how federal funds flow to states, universities, and nonprofit organizations.
