Senate Passes Sweeping College Sports Bill to Stabilize NIL Chaos

The Senate passed a major college sports bill on Monday. The measure aims to stabilize a landscape unsettled by name, image, and likeness deals. It passed with broad bipartisan support.

The legislation now faces an uncertain future in the House. Lawmakers there have not scheduled a vote. Time is running short before the midterm elections.

The bill addresses athlete compensation and transfer rules. It seeks to create a national standard for NIL agreements. Currently, states follow a patchwork of conflicting laws.

Universities have struggled to navigate the current system. Some schools face lawsuits over athlete pay and eligibility. The NCAA has asked Congress for help for years.

The House version of the bill differs from the Senate text. Key disagreements remain over athlete employment status. Talks between the chambers could stall.

The Senate vote was one of the last congressional actions before the midterms. Campaign season will soon dominate the legislative calendar. The bill may not reach the floor until next year.

Supporters say the measure protects athletes and fair competition. Critics argue it does not go far enough. The debate over college sports reform is far from over.
