The State Department plans to redirect up to $125 million in foreign aid to cover energy costs, according to a memo sent to lawmakers.
The move includes nearly $49 million that Congress had set aside for family planning programs in low-income countries.
The department outlined the funding shift in the memo, which was reviewed as part of its notification to Congress.
Lawmakers were told the money would be moved from existing foreign aid accounts to address energy-related expenses.
The contraception funding was originally appropriated for family planning efforts in some of the world’s poorest nations.
Redirecting those funds marks a notable change in how the department allocates previously approved aid.
The memo does not specify which energy costs the money will cover or how the shift will affect family planning programs.
