The Bond Rout Is Deepening Even as Oil Tankers Return to the Strait of Hormuz

Global bond markets are under mounting pressure as investors react to persistent energy supply issues. The selloff deepened this week even after oil tankers resumed transit through the Strait of Hormuz.

The critical waterway had faced disruptions that raised fears of shortages. Shipping traffic has since returned, but the relief failed to calm fixed-income markets.

Refining and distribution networks that turn crude oil into usable fuel remain strained. These logistical bottlenecks continue to push pump prices higher for consumers and businesses.

Rising energy costs are feeding directly into inflation expectations. That forces central banks to keep interest rates elevated for longer than investors had hoped.

Bond prices fall when yields rise, and the current rout reflects that harsh reality. Traders are repricing debt across maturities as inflation proves stubborn.

The Strait of Hormuz normally handles about a fifth of global oil consumption. Its brief closure exposed how fragile the broader energy supply chain truly is.

Even with tankers moving again, refining capacity and storage constraints limit how quickly fuel reaches end users. Those delays sustain upward pressure on prices.

For bondholders, the energy shock compounds an already difficult year. Weak demand at auctions and shifting rate forecasts have added to the selling momentum.

Analysts warn that calm in shipping lanes alone will not solve the underlying problem. Until fuel supply chains stabilize, bonds face continued headwinds from inflation.
