The top 10% of American households are getting richer faster—here’s what’s driving the widening wealth gap

The top 10% of American households have widened the wealth gap significantly over the past three years. Their median net worth has grown by $800,000 during that period.

This increase far outpaces gains seen among middle- and lower-income households. The disparity highlights how asset growth benefits those who already hold substantial wealth.

Stock market performance has played a major role in this trend. Wealthier households tend to hold more stocks and investment accounts, which have risen sharply in value.

Real estate holdings have also contributed to the growing gap. Property values climbed steadily, boosting the net worth of homeowners with higher-value assets.

Higher-income households often have more diversified portfolios. This diversification allows them to capture gains across multiple asset classes during favorable market conditions.

Meanwhile, less affluent Americans rely more heavily on wages than on investments. Wage growth has not kept pace with the returns seen in financial markets.

The result is a widening divide in household wealth. The data suggests that recent economic gains have disproportionately favored those already at the top.
