This test screens for 50 cancers — but Medicare coverage hinges on FDA approval

A new blood test can screen for more than 50 types of cancer from a single draw. The test, called Galleri, is made by the company Grail. It aims to find cancers before symptoms appear, when treatment is often more effective.

The test works by detecting small pieces of tumor DNA that circulate in the blood. This approach is known as multicancer early detection. It is different from standard screening, which usually targets one cancer at a time.

Grail is seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration. That decision will shape whether the test reaches a wider market. It will also determine if Medicare and private insurers agree to pay for it.

Medicare coverage is a major question. The program typically covers tests it deems medically necessary. Without FDA approval, insurers are unlikely to add Galleri to their lists of covered services.

A large study raised doubts about the test’s performance. The trial did not prove that Galleri could reliably detect later-stage cancers. That finding has fueled criticism from some researchers and doctors.

Supporters say the test still shows promise for finding hard-to-detect cancers. They argue that even a modest benefit could save lives. Critics counter that false results may cause anxiety and unnecessary procedures.

Regulators are now reviewing the evidence. Their verdict will affect patients, doctors, and the company’s future. For now, the test remains available only in limited settings and usually at the patient’s own expense.
