Tom Lee Says the ‘Face-Ripping’ Rally Is Delayed, Not Canceled

Tom Lee, head of research at Fundstrat, remains optimistic despite recent market struggles. He believes the sharp rally he forecast earlier this year has simply been postponed. The Federal Reserve’s latest interest-rate decision did not shake his confidence.

Lee had predicted a “face-ripping” rally, a term for a rapid, unexpected surge that forces bearish investors to cover positions. That surge has yet to materialize. Still, Lee argues the conditions for such a move are building.

The Fed held rates steady at its recent meeting, signaling a cautious approach to inflation and growth. Policymakers noted progress on inflation but stopped short of declaring victory. Lee views this stance as supportive for equities over time.

Market participants have grown impatient with bullish calls as stocks trade sideways. Volatility has remained muted, frustrating traders expecting big swings. Lee acknowledges the delay but sees it as a setup, not a failure.

Fundstrat’s internal indicators suggest investor positioning is overly defensive. When sentiment turns this gloomy, even minor good news can trigger outsized buying. That dynamic often fuels face-ripping rallies.

Earnings season has delivered mixed results, with some sectors beating expectations. Tech and consumer discretionary names have shown resilience. Lee points to these pockets of strength as evidence the rally is still possible.

The Fed’s next moves will depend on incoming economic data. A cooling labor market or softer inflation could prompt rate cuts. Lee argues that any dovish shift would act as a catalyst for the delayed surge.

For now, Lee advises patience. He maintains that the rally is not canceled, just postponed. Investors who stay positioned may eventually be rewarded.
