Treasury Launches $1,000 Savings Accounts for 60 Million Kids — But Parents Must Take This Step to Claim One

The Treasury Department has launched a new savings account program for children. The initiative aims to cover roughly 60 million kids across the country. However, families must complete an extra step to activate an account.

The program offers $1,000 in seed money for each eligible child. Parents need to claim this benefit through an official government portal. Without that action, the funds will not be deposited.

Eligibility rules center on the child’s age and citizenship status. Most kids under 18 who are U.S. citizens qualify automatically. Families do not need to pay any fees to open the account.

To get started, parents must verify their identity and their child’s details. This process happens online through a secure Treasury system. Paper applications are not available for this specific program.

Once approved, the $1,000 is invested in a government-backed savings plan. The money grows tax-deferred until the child turns 18. Withdrawals before that age may trigger penalties or taxes.

Parents can also add their own contributions to the account. There are annual limits on how much extra can be deposited. These added funds follow the same tax rules as the initial seed money.

The accounts are designed to encourage long-term saving for education or future needs. Financial experts say the program is not a replacement for other savings tools. Families should review their overall financial plan before contributing.

The Treasury Department has not yet announced when the portal will fully open. Parents are advised to check the official website for updates. Missing the claim deadline could mean losing access to the $1,000 benefit.
