Trump Has Tried to Ban Reporters From Government Spaces Before

President Trump has a history of restricting reporter access to government spaces. His administration has repeatedly tried to limit where journalists can work.

During his first term, the White House banned a CNN reporter from an open press event. The administration later revoked a press pass from another CNN correspondent.

In 2018, officials suspended Jim Acosta’s hard pass after a tense exchange. A federal judge later ordered the pass restored.

The administration also barred reporters from certain agency meetings. Some press briefings were moved to smaller rooms with limited seating.

Officials have used credentialing rules to control who enters federal buildings. These rules often lack clear standards or appeal processes.

Courts have generally favored press access in public government spaces. Judges cite the First Amendment when ruling on these disputes.

Press freedom groups track these incidents as part of a broader pattern. They say such moves chill newsgathering even when overturned.

The White House press corps continues to negotiate access terms. Each new restriction sets a precedent for future administrations.
