The Washington Passport Agency began issuing limited-release passports featuring President Trump’s image on Monday, surprising some applicants at the counter.
The new design replaces the standard imagery found on traditional U.S. passports with a portrait of the president. Officials have described the documents as a special commemorative edition.
Some travelers welcomed the change, calling it a patriotic tribute. Others expressed frustration, arguing that official government documents should remain nonpolitical.
The rollout was limited to a single agency location, catching several passport recipients off guard. Some reported not realizing the design had changed until they opened their new documents.
Customs and Border Protection confirmed the passports are valid for international travel. The agency stated that security features and verification standards remain unchanged.
Critics raised concerns about the precedent of placing a sitting leader’s image on a standard travel document. Supporters countered that similar designs have been used in other countries.
The passport agency has not announced plans for a wider distribution. For now, the special edition remains available only at the Washington office.
