Wall Street Rebounds as Cooler Inflation Revives Rate-Cut Hopes

U.S. stocks rallied Thursday after a closely watched inflation report came in cooler than expected. The data offered investors some reprieve from recent concerns about persistent price pressures. Major indexes closed higher, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posting solid gains.

The consumer price index rose less than forecasters had anticipated last month. Core inflation, which strips out volatile food and energy costs, also eased more than projected. The report reinforced hopes that the Federal Reserve may be able to slow the pace of its interest rate hikes.

Bond yields fell following the release, supporting equity valuations. The 10-year Treasury yield dropped to its lowest level in several sessions. Rate-sensitive technology and growth stocks led the advance, as cheaper borrowing costs typically boost their future earnings outlook.

Artificial intelligence-related shares were among the biggest winners of the day. Investors poured money back into semiconductor and software companies that had pulled back in recent weeks. The renewed enthusiasm came alongside broad market strength, not just a narrow rally in a few names.

Fast-food chain Wendy’s also stood out, with its stock jumping after announcing a new partnership. The deal is expected to expand the company’s digital ordering capabilities and drive customer engagement. Shares closed sharply higher, outperforming the broader restaurant sector.

The inflation relief lifted sentiment across most sectors, though energy and consumer staples lagged. Traders interpreted the data as a sign that the Fed’s tightening campaign may be nearing its end. Still, policymakers have stressed they need more evidence before declaring victory over inflation.

Thursday’s move erased part of the losses seen earlier in the week, when hawkish comments from central bank officials spooked markets. The rebound suggests investors remain highly sensitive to any shift in economic data. Volatility is likely to persist as the next Fed meeting approaches.

Analysts cautioned that one month of softer inflation does not confirm a lasting trend. Supply chain disruptions and wage growth remain potential upside risks to prices. The market’s reaction, however, showed how quickly sentiment can turn when the data provides a favorable surprise.

The session underscored the central role of inflation data in driving near-term trading. With earnings season winding down, macro reports will likely dominate headlines. Investors now turn their attention to upcoming producer price figures and retail sales numbers for further clues.

Overall, the day’s gains provided a dose of optimism after a rocky stretch. But the path forward remains uncertain, and traders are braced for continued swings. For now, the market welcomed the respite, even as it keeps a wary eye on the Fed’s next move.
