Supreme Court Blocks Inmate’s Religious Rights Lawsuit Over Forcible Dreadlock Shaving

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a Louisiana inmate cannot sue state prison officials after guards forcibly shaved his dreadlocks, a practice central to his Rastafarian faith. The decision blocks Damon Landor’s religious rights lawsuit.

Landor, a practicing Rastafarian, had his dreadlocks cut in 2014 during a prison intake process. He argued the act violated his sincerely held religious beliefs. Prison officials maintained the shaving was a routine security measure.

The Court’s majority found that the prison guards were entitled to qualified immunity. This legal doctrine protects government officials from lawsuits unless they violate clearly established law. The justices determined no prior case had clearly defined such violations in this context.

The ruling does not address whether the shaving itself was unconstitutional. It focuses narrowly on the question of legal protection for the officials involved. Lower courts had previously split on the issue, creating legal uncertainty.

Justice Clarence Thomas wrote the majority opinion. He emphasized the need for deference to prison administrators in matters of security and discipline. The decision drew criticism from civil liberties groups.

Religious freedom advocates argue the ruling undermines protections for minority faiths in the prison system. They point to the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, a federal law meant to safeguard inmates’ religious practices. The Court did not address that law in this case.

Landor remains incarcerated in Louisiana. The case now returns to lower courts, where he may pursue other legal avenues. Legal experts say the decision sets a significant precedent for similar future claims.
