The State Department has unveiled designs for a limited-edition passport honoring the United States’ 250th anniversary. The special document, called the “Patriot Passport,” features an image of President Trump on its cover.
Officials announced plans to release 40,000 of these commemorative passports. The regular design will remain available for most applicants.
The special passport is part of broader efforts to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial in 2026. The White House shared images of the passport on social media.
This marks the first time a sitting president’s likeness will appear on a standard U.S. passport. Previous commemorative editions have featured landmarks or historical symbols.
The State Department will accept applications for the special passport this summer. It will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis to U.S. citizens.
Critics have questioned the cost and political nature of the design. Supporters view it as a patriotic tribute to the anniversary.
The passports will include standard security features. They will remain valid for the standard 10-year period for adults.
The announcement comes as the nation prepares for a year of celebrations. Other commemorative items, including coins and stamps, are also planned.
