Your healthcare could now cost $185,500 in retirement — and that doesn’t include long-term care

Retirement healthcare costs have reached a new high. An average 65-year-old couple retiring today can expect to spend $185,500 on medical expenses throughout retirement. This figure does not include long-term care costs.

The forecast reflects rising prices for medical care. Managing chronic health conditions also contributed to the increase. The estimate comes from a recent analysis of retirement healthcare expenses.

These costs cover Medicare premiums, deductibles, and copayments. Prescription drug expenses are also included. The analysis assumes retirees have traditional Medicare coverage.

Many retirees underestimate these expenses. Healthcare inflation typically outpaces general inflation. This gap can strain fixed retirement budgets.

Long-term care remains a separate financial risk. Nursing homes and assisted living facilities can cost tens of thousands annually. Medicare does not cover most long-term care services.

Planning for these expenses requires proactive saving. Health savings accounts offer tax advantages for medical costs. Some retirees may consider Medicare supplement insurance.

The $185,500 projection serves as a baseline. Individual costs vary based on health status and location. Retirees should review their own potential expenses regularly.
