‘I’m 71 and inherited $20,000. How should I invest this windfall?’

At 71 years old, a retiree recently inherited $20,000 and described the windfall as a stroke of luck. The individual already maintains an IRA, a high-yield savings account, four certificates of deposit, plus standard checking and savings accounts.

The inheritance adds to an existing financial cushion, raising questions about the best use of the funds. For someone in their early 70s, immediate priorities often center on preserving capital and ensuring liquidity.

Financial advisors typically suggest bolstering emergency reserves first. With a high-yield savings account already in place, depositing the inheritance there offers easy access while earning modest interest.

Another option is to invest the money in shorter-term CDs to lock in current rates. Given the retiree already holds four CDs, adding another could diversify maturity dates without risking principal.

The retiree might also consider using the funds for healthcare expenses or home modifications. Such moves can improve quality of life without generating tax complications.

Donating a portion to charity could provide a tax deduction if the retiree itemizes. This approach also allows for a philanthropic impact while managing the taxable estate.

Ultimately, the decision hinges on personal goals and risk tolerance. Consulting a fee-only financial planner can provide tailored advice without sales incentives.
