Nvidia’s Reported OpenAI Lease Deal Echoes a Risky Tech-Bubble Practice, Analyst Warns

Nvidia may soon support an OpenAI data-center lease in what could become the largest arrangement of its kind. Investors are expressing concern over the potential deal, according to a recent report.

The move would mark a return to a practice seen during the tech-bubble era, one analyst warned. That habit involves chipmakers acting as financial backstops for large infrastructure projects tied to their own products.

Under the reported deal, Nvidia would guarantee a lease for OpenAI to build and operate a massive data center. Such financing structures can expose the chipmaker to significant risk if the project underperforms.

OpenAI would use the facility to train and run its advanced artificial intelligence models. The data center would rely heavily on Nvidia’s high-performance graphics processing units.

This arrangement mirrors strategies common in the late 1990s technology boom. During that period, companies often used complex financial deals to fund rapid expansion, sometimes leading to severe losses.

Analysts warn that reviving this practice could signal overheating in the AI sector. The scale of the potential lease would amplify the risk for Nvidia if market conditions shift.

The report has drawn attention as Nvidia’s stock remains highly valued amid surging demand for AI chips. Any exposure to large, uncertain projects could pressure the company’s financial stability.

OpenAI continues to seek massive computing resources for its growing suite of AI products. The partnership with Nvidia would secure the necessary hardware for its ambitious development goals.

Market observers are closely watching how this deal develops, given its potential impact on both companies. The outcome could set a precedent for future infrastructure financing in the AI industry.
